The Ryerson Centre for Immigration and Settlement is conducting a research study on Immigrant entrepreneurship in the GTA. This study is aimed at enhancing understanding about the different motivations for and pathways to entrepreneurship for newcomers in the GTA. We are also interested in learning about how other factors such as gender and social networks have influenced newcomers’ experiences of entrepreneurship to better understand the barriers faced by newcomer entrepreneurs seeking to expand or scale up their businesses.
The findings from this study will be used to develop and test out a web-based resource for newcomers which will present information related to establishing and scaling-up a business, including an overview of the regulatory framework governing entrepreneurship in Ontario and the GTA in terms of incentives and impediments, and how these have affected previous newcomers’ entrepreneurial activities in particular. Our hope is that this resource will equip newcomers to make choices which enhance their economic security and ultimately support their economic integration in Canada.
